Winemaking Philosophy

We are very lucky in that our sunny hillside is a terrific growing environment for Syrah. Our plan is to let that environment speak for itself in our wines. We don’t try to mess around with the fruit too much and in return we have consistently achieved Syrah that is exemplary of the varietal.

Our blends, which we only make occasionally in relatively small quantities, are a chance to play a bit with classic combinations of Syrah and other varietals. For the Blythleigh we created a Rhone-style blend while our forthcoming Mogoloo will be in the Grange-style.

The ’05 Syrah has a deep red, black cherry color, consistent with the black fruit aromas of the nose. These are balanced by subtle vanilla and toasty oak notes. This wine is nicely balanced with a rich, explosive finish. It will continue to evolve well in the bottle for another 3-5 years. 82 cases produced.

This Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Viogniere, Mouvedre, and Petite Syrah has a vibrant nose of red currants, black pepper, and olive tapenade with hints of toasted oak. It is nicely balanced from the soft entry to lively fruit flavors in the mid-palate and balanced acidity with round tannins in the finish. 136 cases produced.
